Managing Vertigo and Other Balance Difficulties

One of the most challenging conditions seen in Dr. Theirl's office is vertigo. The sensation of moving, dizziness, spinning, uneasiness or balance trouble are all ways of describing balance system dysfunction. Many people typically do not associate treating symptoms of car sickness, dizziness or vertigo with a visit to the chiropractor, but Dr. Theirl frequently treats patients with these symptoms. Regardless of the diagnosis, he works to optimize not only a patient's body but also their brain and nervous system function. This is of the utmost importance when treating a patient who reports symptoms of balance disorders.

As with any pain or symptom, it is perceived and perhaps described differently by different patients. Some describe the sensation as the room spinning, themselves spinning, inability to steady themselves, a sinking feeling or the floor slipping out from under them. Each description provides insight into which balance system may be the main problem.

Therapies for these symptoms are also numerous and varied. Many patients try a type of physical therapy called VRT (vestibular rehabilitation therapy). Cases that involve fistulas will likely require surgery. The typical medical approach is to manage symptoms with various pharmaceuticals including anti-histamines, diuretics and migraine medications. As a chiropractic neurologist, Dr. Theirl's approach is non-invasive and holistic. It incorporates assessment and treatment of all of the systems involved with balance and movement. He utilizes specific spinal and extremity adjustments (to stimulate the proprioceptive system), various head positions and vestibular spinning chair motions (to stimulate the vestibular system), sensory stimulation such as electric stimulation or music (specific for stimulating the side of the brain that is functionally deficient), and visual rehabilitation in the form of eye exercises and visual stimulation by using specific colors and patterns (to excite various areas of the brain using eyesight). In addition, Dr. Theirl recommends and utilizes nutritional support to aid the body in maintaining the necessary building blocks for healthy, properly functioning systems.

This holistic approach centers on re-establishing and strengthening body/brain patterns that are necessary for balance and proper function.  In short, re-establishing the communication between all of these systems will allow for proper balance. Those who have not had success with pharmaceutical or surgical treatments, those who may want to avoid the potential risks of those types of treatment due to pregnancy or other factors or simply those seeking a natural approach may find this treatment ideal.

Ask the Doctor
What role does nutrition play when managing dizziness or vertigo?

Numerous vitamins and minerals have helped patients suffering with varying intensities of tinnitus, dizziness and vertigo. Omega 3 Fatty Acids are essential to brain health as these fats help nerve cells transmit information. Fish oils or flax seed oil can be used to meet this need. Supplements necessary to reduce symptoms are based on an individual's clinical history. In general, magnesium and calcium are important in maintaining regular nerve impulses, the B vitamins are necessary for normal brain and central nervous system functions and zinc promotes a healthy immune system. Vitamins C and E exercise their antioxidant power to fight free radicals that can damage the fragile workings of the inner ear and brain. Each of these vitamins and minerals helps in different ways, but all help to maximize proper function of the hearing and balance systems. Unfortunately, specific dosage recommendations are impossible without the knowledge of each patient's specific medical history. You may find benefits from keeping a low sodium diet and avoiding nicotine and caffeine as all of these affect blood pressure and may increase your symptoms.
